For 27 years, the International Symposium on Human Identification has been the meeting where DNA professionals come to learn about, discuss, and share the latest technologies. Some of the latest technologies presented have included:

  • DNA phenotyping: using information gathered from SNPs to create a “mugshot” of person that investigators can use to narrow down potential suspects.
  • Rapid DNA generates DNA profiles from samples in 90 minutes, enabling an arrestee’s DNA to be tested and searched against databases within hours of arrest, so that the result may be reviewed while the suspect is still in police custody.
  • Familial Search: taking a DNA profile obtained from a crime scene and comparing it to profiles in CODIS and other databases to identify male relatives, potentially uncovering new leads.
  • In cases where only a small DNA sample is available, DNA Methylation determines the type of body fluid left at a crime scene without consuming the sample (in comparison to traditional DNA typing).
  • Massively Parallel Sequencing analyzes over 1,000,000 loci in a single reaction, potentially solving some of the biggest challenges facing forensic laboratories – degraded DNA and samples with multiple contributors.
