Registration fees include lunch
In this hands-on class you will work in pairs or groups to try to use the techniques of genetic genealogy to solve a crime. You will be provided with results from a DNA test that you will need to analyze to find the right kind of DNA matches to help you with your question.
Once you have identified the right DNA matches you will have to do some genealogy work, including looking at census records and social security death records to find out more about your target family.
Lastly, you will have to use the detective skills you have already honed to find out which living person in the target family is most likely the match to your submitted DNA.
- Get a feel for what kinds of results you receive from a genetic genealogy test
- Understand the new skill required to chase this lead, namely, genealogy research
- Realize that many of the skills detectives already have fit perfectly into this research plan
Anyone working with or interested in genetic evidence in any way. This includes law enforcement at all levels, attorneys, victim advocates, lab directors, lab techs, in short anyone interested in learning more about how DNA testing and genealogy can impact law enforcement.
