Emily Simek is a Forensic Scientist experienced in DNA laboratory analysis and interpretation with the Utah Bureau of Forensic Services in Salt Lake City, Utah. As an integral member of the DNA Technical Team, she participates in DNA casework and oversees the training of new laboratory hires and existing biology personnel as a Lead Trainer. Alongside her training and casework responsibilities, Emily works as a member of the Crime Scene Response Team by assisting law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Utah with crime scene processing and documentation. Prior to her Lead Trainer role, she participated in the High-Throughput casework team for several years to develop an innovative and new systems flow that helped eliminate Utah’s SAK backlog.

Emily holds a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology and is nearing completion of a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a concentration in Forensic Science. Prior to her employment at the state laboratory, she participated in cancer research and assisted undergraduate students with their independent research projects revolving around DNA analysis.

Emily has received several scholarship awards for her research poster presentations while completing her undergraduate education. She has been a member of the International Society for Forensic Genetics for several years and is excited about the growth and potential she sees in the forensic field.
