Senior Criminalist, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

John Bockrath has been a Senior Criminalist with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Scientific Services Bureau since 1990. During his career he has worked and testified in the areas of narcotics and blood alcohol testing, driving under the influence of alcohol, forensic biology, DNA, crime scene investigation and bloodstain pattern analysis.

John graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in physiology in 1990. While a student at UCSD, he worked at the San Diego Veterans Administration Hospital in La Jolla, CA, assisting with clinical and research studies in the Non-Invasive Peripheral Vascular Surgery Laboratory. Prior to working in law enforcement, John spent five years working in Clinical Laboratory Medicine at three hospitals in Southern California.

During the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, John worked on the Paramount Serial rapist case which involved the kidnapping and sexual assault of young girls and the Belmont Serial rapist case which involved over thirty victims in Long Beach, CA.

In 2004, Bockrath began working with the Torrance Police Department as the first LASD DNA Contract Criminalist in the County of Los Angeles. While his duties initially focused on examining unsolved Cold Case Homicides for the Torrance Police Department, they rapidly evolved into working on all crime categories of DNA evidence, crime scene investigations, and consultations ranging from evidence storage issues to the civilianization of their CSI unit and building of a new crime lab facility.

Since 2018, John has submitted DNA evidence in four sexual assault homicide cases for Genetic Genealogy Analysis resulting in three cases solved including the kidnapping, sexual assault and homicide of 11 year old Teri Lynn Hollis in 1972. Collectively these three homicide cases became the first cases solved and prosecuted in Los Angeles County through the use of Genetic Genealogy Analysis.

John has provided forensic instruction and lectures for law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and defense attorneys, social service agencies, medical examiners, law enforcement and forensic conferences, and at California Marymount University. He has received awards and service recognition from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Torrance Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sexual Assault Coordinating Council, and as a co-chair for an International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts Training Conference.

John holds a FAA private pilot license and has been a member and aviator in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary for the past 26 years. In his free time he enjoys flying, sailing, scuba diving, travel and theatre. He is also a proud Horn Frog parent of a sophomore BFA Theatre Studies student at Texas Christian University.
