Michael Brandhagen

Forensic DNA Scientist, FBI Laboratory

Dr. Michael Brandhagen holds a B.S. from the University of South Dakota and a Ph.D. from George Mason University, where he studied the population genetics of river otters. He has worked at the FBI Laboratory since 2004. His first six years there were spent performing DNA casework, but he now works exclusively on forensic DNA research and validation projects. He is primarily focused on the development and implementation of custom, innovative DNA methods. He has given numerous scientific presentations and lectures on forensic DNA analysis to a wide variety of audiences including government officials and scientists at the national and international level. Dr. Brandhagen’s most recent presentations and work over the last several years have been focused on NGS/MPS technologies and includes several publications on these topics.  Prior to working at the FBI Laboratory he was an adjunct faculty member at George Mason University.
