Nick is a career prosecutor with nearly two decades of experience investigating and prosecuting complex criminal cases, including homicide, sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. Currently serving as the Deputy Bureau Chief of the Cold Case Homicide Task Force, Nick oversees the review, investigation, and prosecution of nearly 300 unsolved homicide cases in Suffolk County. In this role, he works closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to identify investigative opportunities, develop prosecutable cases, and apply emerging forensic technologies to bring long-overdue justice to victims and their families.
In 2022, Nick was selected by District Attorney Ray Tierney to join the Gilgo Homicide Task Force, a multidisciplinary team established to reinvigorate the investigation into a series of murders connected to Gilgo Beach. Working alongside prosecutors, investigators, analysts, and law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies, he played a significant role in reviewing decades of investigative material, coordinating legal process, and developing evidence that ultimately contributed to the identification and arrest of Rex A. Heuermann.
As the lead Assistant District Attorney to DA Tierney, Nick helped prepare and present evidence to a special grand jury, including advanced DNA analysis and cellular location data, which resulted in multiple indictments of Mr. Heuermann. Nick also successfully helped lead the presentation of evidence in a landmark Frye hearing regarding the admissibility of SNP-based DNA evidence. Working collaboratively with leading forensic scientists and members of the prosecution team, he helped establish the scientific reliability of this emerging technology, resulting in the first judicial ruling in New York State history admitting SNP DNA evidence in a criminal prosecution. The decision marked a significant development in the use of advanced forensic science in criminal investigations and prosecutions.
Throughout his career with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Nick has held numerous leadership positions, including Acting Deputy Bureau Chief of both the District Court Bureau and Intake Bureau. There, he supervised and mentored attorneys and support staff, developed office-wide policies and procedures, and helped implement significant technological and discovery reforms.
Prior to these assignments, Nick spent six years in the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau prosecuting some of the office’s most serious felony cases involving child sexual abuse, domestic violence, and physical abuse. Throughout his career, he has successfully prosecuted numerous serious felony matters and is recognized for expertise in complex investigations, forensic evidence, witness preparation, trial advocacy, and prosecutorial leadership.
Nick, a lifelong resident of Suffolk County, resides with his wife, two kids, and three dogs.
