Pamela Hofsass

Chief of Forensic Services Division, Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff

Pamela Hofsass holds over 35 years of experience in law enforcement, having worked almost every assignment available; patrol, SWAT, Community Policing, Recruitment, Academy, Investigations in addition to the Forensic Services Division. Prior to law enforcement, Pam worked as an analytical chemist for several companies including Schering-Plough and Genentech. She began her forensic science career in 1994 with the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) Crime Lab as a sworn criminalist and quickly advanced from drug analysis to the newly formed DNA Unit. Based on personnel needs, she traded between the Lab and CSI for 12 years before moving on to Sexual Assault and Homicide Investigations as an Inspector. She left SFPD at the rank of Lieutenant in early 2015 and accepted the position of Chief of the Forensic Services Division for the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff. The medium-sized Lab (including CSI and Property) provides forensic services to over 25 Law Enforcement Agencies within the County. Pam brings to the SO Lab a keen focus on efficiency and effectiveness based on her own experience as a detective and as a DNA analyst. She is a strong proponent of cross-training and the return of the Generalist.

Pam has taught forensic science and crime scene investigations to first responders and detectives through the Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation and workshops on DNA evidence collection throughout the US and Canada. She has a BA in Chemistry from Rutgers University and a Master of Science degree in Forensic Science from the University of California, Davis. She is a member of ASCLD, AAFS, CAC and CACLD. Pam serves on the board for ATF’s CGIC (Crime Gun Intelligence) and NIJ’s DNA Efficiency (DEI) Committee. Away from the Lab, Pam enjoys travelling with her wife and two daughters, entertaining friends and family at the piano and tootling around Golden Gate Park on her comfort bike.
