Sanne (Elise) Aalbers

Research Scientist, Department of Biostatistics, University of Washington (Seattle)

Sanne Aalbers’ main area of interest is forensic statistics: in her BSc thesis, she analyzed the statistical evidence in the Lucia de Berk case (famous in the Netherlands for its miscarriage of justice) and for her MSc thesis, she developed novel likelihood ratio models for gunshot residue comparisons. Sanne worked as a Senior Consultant Forensics at Deloitte, specializing in machine learning applications for fraud investigations, but eventually missed the ‘real’ forensic cases. In her current job, she’s focusing on forensic genetics, with main projects involving statistical modeling of sequencing data and protein data together with Dr. Bruce Weir. In her free time she can usually be found hiking a trail in the beautiful Washington state or a National Park (which is a welcome change from her super flat home country).
