Steven Myers

California Department of Justice Jan Bashinski DNA Laboratory

Mr. Steven Myers has 30 years of experience in the field of forensic serology and DNA analysis. For the past 28 years, he has been employed by the California Department of Justice Jan Bashinski DNA Laboratory. Mr. Myers’ primary duties over this time have been casework and method development, as well as teaching through Cal DOJ’s California Criminalistics Institute. Mr. Myers is a member of the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM) and the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC), through which he has helped create documents relevant to the topic of likelihood ratios, including familial searching recommendations; the validation of probabilistic genotyping systems; assigning propositions for likelihood ratios; and reporting genotyping results as likelihood ratios and using a verbal scale. Whether its kinship analysis or probabilistic genotyping, Mr. Myers’ belief is the same: if you understand the meaning, formulation, and underpinnings of your likelihood ratio statistic, you will be more likely to word it correctly in your reports and on the witness stand.
