Over the course of an exhaustive investigation that combined anthropological detective work, and exacting DNA analysis, the legends were borne out by a massive investigation. Fifty-five graves were found on the site – 23 of which had been unknown, according to Kendra Felipe-Ortega, a senior forensic analyst at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, who handled the Dozier DNA.
