From Tarp to Truth: DNA Evidence Unravels a Hidden Homicide

On 08/04/2022, a passerby driving near Train Avenue and Richner Avenue in Cleveland observed a mattress and tarp on the roadside and called 911. Cleveland Police responded, removed the mattress, and lifted the tarp, revealing a deceased male. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified.

The victim was found wrapped in a plastic tarp with multiple blankets. There were no signs of bloodshed or weapons at the scene. The body showed advanced decomposition and a visible injury to the left chest. The medical examiner later identified the victim—previously reported missing—and determined he had sustained two fatal gunshot wounds.

Investigation established that the victim had been shot in a backyard, wrapped in a tarp, placed in his own Chevrolet Silverado, and dumped at the roadside. Four suspects were identified as assisting in moving the body and abandoning the vehicle.

A total of 43 samples were processed, including onbody swabs, scene items, vehicle touch DNA, a suspected bloodstain, and buccal swabs. Samples were extracted using Maxwell® FSC DNA IQ Casework Kits with the Maxwell® FSC 48 instrument, quantified using the PowerQuant® System, and amplified using the PowerPlex® Fusion System. Capillary electrophoresis was performed on the Applied Biosystems 3500 Genetic Analyzer, and data was evaluated using Cybergenetics TrueAllele® probabilistic genotyping software.

Twentytwo DNA profiles were suitable for comparison. Eight profiles provided match support for one or more suspects, primarily on items associated with wrapping, transporting, or access points to the victim’s clothing. Suspectassociated DNA was found on the yellow blanket, the brown blanket, the blue tarp, a red/black strap, the victim’s pants pocket openings, and the heel area of the victim’s right shoe. Additional profiles were either inconclusive or showed no association with the suspects.

Following the investigation and supporting DNA evidence, all four suspects pled guilty.

This case shows how thorough evidence collection and DNA workflow can uncover key handling events. It highlights that detailed sampling across all related items can reveal suspect involvement and strongly support investigative conclusions.
