Pioneer in the introduction of DNA testing for paternity and kinship studies in 1994, alongside Dr. Emilio Yunis. Pioneer in the introduction of STR markers in forensic genetics in 1995. Pioneer in the analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-chromosome STR markers in 1996. Recipient of the Aventis–National Academy of Medicine Award in 2002 and 2004. Served as a professor at the Institute of Genetics and the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Colombia, from 1994 to 2025.
Author of 80 international scientific publications and presenter of more than 150 contributions at scientific conferences. Directs a private laboratory accredited under ISO/IEC 17025:2017, which performs the largest number of DNA tests in Colombia and has analyzed more than 300,000 genetic profiles to date. Member of the International Society for Forensic Genetics (ISFG) and the Spanish and Portuguese Speaking Working Group of the ISFG (GHEP-ISFG) since 1998.
