Marie Allen

Professor Forensic Genetics, Uppsala University, Sweden

Marie Allen’s research is focused on developments of techniques and assays to improve analysis of challenging samples with limited and degraded DNA amounts. Several new assays based on pyrosequencing, real-time quantification, Sanger-sequencing and Massive Parallel Sequencing have been developed and used successfully in analysis of evidence material in forensic cases. The new tests have also been used in historical DNA research, as the identification analyses of the putative remains of Nicolaus Copernicus, Carin Göring and Saint Birgitta of Sweden. In addition, they are now using methylation analysis for age prediction and separation of monozygotic twin pairs. Outside the research lab, scuba diving is one of her hobbies, however, only in warmer climates than in Sweden.
