Kris Cano brings a distinguished record of scientific expertise and leadership. She began her academic training at Florida State University, earning a B.S. in Biochemistry, followed by an M.A. in Chemistry from the University of South Florida. Her forensic science career began in 1996 with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, where she performed serology and DNA casework and provided expert testimony throughout the state. She later served as a Forensic Biologist at the United States Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory, conducting DNA analyses for Department of Defense agencies worldwide and supporting investigations both domestically and abroad.
In 2002, Kris joined the Scottsdale Police Department Crime Laboratory, where she spent more than 21 years in progressively senior leadership roles. As DNA Technical Leader and Quality Assurance Manager, Forensic Laboratory Manager, and ultimately Forensic Services Director, she oversaw full-service accredited forensic operations—including DNA, Toxicology, Latent Prints, Digital Forensics, Seized Drugs, Crime Scene, and Property & Evidence. Her responsibilities included budget and grant management, staffing, strategic planning, quality systems, and accreditation compliance, while maintaining proficiency in technical review across all validated DNA methodologies. As a member of the Police Department’s Executive Leadership Team, she played a key role in shaping long-term forensic capabilities and mentoring scientists and supervisors across multiple disciplines.
After retiring from municipal service, Kris transitioned to the private sector with Signature Science, where she has supported scalable forensic solutions for agencies nationwide.
Kris has qualified as an expert witness in forensic serology and DNA analysis approximately 60 times since 1997, testifying in state courts across Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas, Hawaii, and Washington, as well as in federal courts and military tribunals domestically and internationally.
Throughout her career, Kris has been recognized for her ability to integrate scientific rigor with strong organizational leadership. A long-standing member of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD) and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), she continues to contribute to national forensic practice and quality standards while championing scientific excellence and integrity.
In addition to her forensic background, Kris is an executive leader. She currently serves as the Chief Advancement Officer for Leadership Austin, overseeing earned and contributed revenue strategies to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability. Prior to that, she served as Executive Director and CEO of YWCA Greater Austin, advancing mission-driven programs focused on equity and community empowerment.
